Inner East Region Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Profile
This community profile was prepared by IEPCP as a data source document to support partners with their planning, submissions, service support, and advocacy, and to contribute to improving the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who live, work and play in our catchment.
While this profile is drawn from the 2016 Census, it does not reflect the wider population of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who may study or work in the Inner East, not rhe wider Victorian Aboriginal Community with ongoing cultural and ancestral connections to this region. This profile also does not identify the health and wellbeing needs of residents. Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations in the Eastern Region will have their own statistics and understandings about the composition and needs of the Aboriginal Community. Reference should be made to these agencies for more recent and nuanced information about Community needs and priorities.
Health and Wellbeing Services Supporting Aboriginal Tertiary and Secondary Students in the Inner East – Koolin Balit Phase 2
There is a positive correlation between level of education and social wellbeing for Aboriginal people, but there are a number of barriers which are faced by Aboriginal students impacting on their ability to enter and succeed at tertiary study. Having Aboriginal specific support on campus is very important and has positive impacts on student access, retention and success.
Inner East PCP Koolin Balit Phase 2 was focused on strengthening care pathways for Aboriginal students, aiming to improve the retention of Aboriginal tertiary students in the inner east by linking them with local health and community support services. We worked with Koori Liaison Officers and consulted Aboriginal organisations in the east and tertiary institutions to develop partnerships, facilitate cultural audits and training, implement culturally appropriate policies and processes, and integrate with HealthPathways Melbourne for GPs.
