Most Significant Change (MSC)

Clear Horizon’s flagship evaluation technique, Most Significant Change is a powerful participatory tool for monitoring, evaluation and organisational learning.
Learn how the Most Significant Change technique can help you uncover the real human impact of your social change initiative.

Most Significant Change (MSC) offers an engaging and participatory method for uncovering insights into how programs and interventions are affecting lives.

It goes beyond merely capturing and documenting participants’ stories of change, giving diverse stakeholders the chance to engage with and influence program intention, impact and ultimately, its future direction. Developed by Rick Davies, with the User Guide co-written by Clear Horizon’s Jess Dart, the technique had been awarded the Best Evaluation and Policy System Award by the Australasian Evaluation Society, and has now been used in hundreds of organisations across the world.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Understand the theory and purpose of MSC
  • Apply story collection and selection processes
  • Apply all the key steps involved in implementing the MSC technique in your context
  • Capture participant and beneficiary stories of change
  • Understand how MSC can be used alongside other monitoring and evaluation techniques
  • Design an MSC plan
  • Gain a deeper understanding of the impact your intervention is creating
